Memphis Middle School
​Science Challenge

Come out to our science challenges and have a ton of fun learning, experimenting, and competing!
You'll spend an afternoon exploring the wonderful world of science while having fun and meeting fellow scientists!

On-Site Registration
​
1:10 pm

We'll welcome you and get you ready for an awesome day!
If you've already registered online, there is no need to come to on-site registration! The microscope activity will begin promptly at 1:30 pm. 

Exploring Microscopes!
1:30 pm - 2:10 pm

Participants dive into the microscopic world of cells to explore the fundamental building blocks of our Earth and the organisms calling it home.

Spaghetti Marshmallow Challenge (Prizes)
2:15 pm - 2:45 pm


Students will engage in an engineering and teamwork challenge that involves groups of students trying to build a standing structure out of spaghetti noodles that will hold a marshmallow off the ground as high as possible. They will be able to earn prizes through this event.

pH Experiment
2:50 pm - 3:35 pm

Using a red cabbage-derived mixture as a pH indicator, the participants will get to test different substances and see for themselves what color the indicator turns to reflect the concentration of H+ and OH- ions inside.

Homemade Ice Cream!
​3:40 pm - 4:05 pm



​With half and half, sugar, vanilla flavoring, and a bag of ice and salt, the students will create their own delicious homemade ice cream while learning about the scientific principles behind their creation.

Awards and Conclusion

4:10 pm - 4:30 pm

We hope you all had a wonderful time with us! Before we part, we'll present a certificate to each participant, as well as awards for the top competitors in the science scavenger hunt and spelling bee. On behalf of the Memphis Junior Science Association, we hope we inspired you to continue to pursue science activities in all disciplines of science!

FAQ's


How will the teams of students be selected for the Spaghetti Marshmallow Challenge?
We'll give students the option to form groups when the activity begins! We'll form groups with the remaining kids so that everyone gets to participate!
Exactly what ingredients will be used to make the homemade ice cream? 
The homemade ice cream will be made with half-and-half, table sugar, and vanilla flavoring.
